shattered text in inkscape

i was bored again, so i decided to play with making a shattered text effect(broken glass, smashed effect) in inkscape.

here is the result that i came up with:

tell me what you think…

if i get a good response, i will do a tutorial for how to do something like this…

EDIT:  i have now done this tutorial… you can view it here

splatter brushes for inkscape

once again, nicu has inspired me to play with inkscape, and using ”brushes” for inscape.
i found some splatterbrushes for the GIMP at deviantart,
so i decided to vectorise them with inkscape and try to use them.

here is what i ended up with:

The original brushes (for the GIMP) can be found here: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/45042105/

Here is my SVGz file of these ”brushes” (each path is an individual brush) :http://www.box.net/shared/uiozdacf4b

For info on how to use ”brushes” in inkscape - have a look at nicu’s tutorial

3000 clipart

there is about a week til LGM2007 and we at the open clip art library (we being me and jon at the moment :P ) have decided to set a goal of making it to the 3000 clipart milestone before LGM. So if you have some SVG clipart lying around that you were too lazy to upload before… DO IT NOW! haha. No Seriously. NOW!

simple bubble in inkscape (orb, ball, bubble)

Inspired once again by nicu’s post about his orb research i have decided to write a simple tutorial on how to make a basic bubble (bubble, orb, ball, whatever you want to call it.)

This Tutorial uses the blur filter that is only in Inkscape version 0.45 and later.

Step One
Open Inkscape and draw a circle.

Step Two

  1. Set the Fill colour of the circle to None
  2. Set the Stroke colour of the circle to the colour that you want, I chose blue.

  3. Make the stroke width nice and thick.
  4. Play with the blur amount in the fill/stroke dialog to blur the circle up a bit.

This is how it should look:

Step Three

  1. Now, take the circle tool and draw an ellipse towards the top of the original circle.
  2. Set the ellipse fill colour to the same colour as the blurred outline circle
  3. Set the ellipse stroke colour to none

This is how it should look:

  4. Now, change the fill of the ellipse so it is a gradient from the colour you chose before to transparent

Step Four

  1. Now, Duplicate the outer blurred circle object (Right Click on the circle and choose duplicate)

  2. Set the blur of the newly duplicated circle to none
  3. Make sure the unblurred version of the circle is on top of everything.
  4. Press Control+A to select all the items
  5. In the menus up the top choose Object > Clip > Set

Step Five

  • Add a little light spot on your bubble and blur it up a bit, and you’re done!

3d look – ropes & tubes in inkscape

As part of the screenshots that inkscape.org published to promote the new features of release 0.45, there was a nifty little tutorial that demonstrated a cool effect that could make 3d like tubes and ropes using the new gaussian blur feature.

Anyhoo, when valessiobrito uploaded a simple paperclip to the open clip art library i took my chance to utilise the technique outlined in the inkscape tutorial to remix the paperclip to give it bit more of a “3d” feel.

yet another cheesy inkscape effect

Im so very sorry about the lame pun, but i was playing with the 3d text tecnique that i documented in my last tutorial and i came up with this using inkscape: please tell me what you think!

Basically the same result, but its yellow and has holes in it.

Sorry again about the lame pun.

nicu’s clipart is back

one of the big contributors to the old Open Clip Art Library site was nicubunu. Of late, he has not submitted many cliparts, however last night he added a new bunch of top notch clipart to the best collection of all public domain clipart on the web. (im talking of the Open Clip Art Library of course! :P )

Nicu is not the only one that has been submitting clipart to the collection; there has been a steady increase in uploads to Open Clip Art Library and i speculate that this has something to do with to the new Open Clip Art Library site (which is powered by the Open Source media hosting engine, ccHost.)

Nicu’s newest submissions are very diverse: chompy smiley faces, a donkey on a plate, lizards, easter eggs, piano keys, flowers and broken hearts (just in time for valentines day). Below are a few of his submissions that i liked very much, or you can view all his submissions to the new OpenClipArt site here

alice in wonderland clipart (update)

If you have read my past post about stumbling on the original Alice in Wonderland artwork by Sir John Tenniel then you will know that i had started uploading SVG versions of these up on to The Open Clip Art Library. After doing this, i realised that with me being so lazy, that i will probably never convert and upload them all.
So, i uploaded the remaining raster images as “Requests” on the Open Clip Art site so i could get others out in the world to help me convert them.

This was a great idea, as Mr Gerald_G (i call him mr clipart extraordinaire) uploaded some very cool remixes of some of the images.
