About LGM:

The Libre Graphics Meeting exists to unite and accelerate the efforts behind Free, Libre and Open Source creative software. Since 2006, this annual meeting is the premiere conference for developers, users and supporters of projects such as GIMP, Inkscape, Blender, Krita, Scribus, Hugin, the Open Clipart Library, and the Open Font Library who are gathered to work on interoperability, shared standards, and new ideas. Work at prior LGMs has pushed the state of the art in important areas such as color management, cross-application sharing of assets, and common interchange formats.

Update on the fedora branding fonts

Further to the previous post on the new fedora branding fonts trial, a new contender has emerged for the body text font. Cantarell is a contemporary Humanist sans serif that was designed with on-screen reading in mind.

Cantarell was designed by using free and open source software (including fontforge). Dave also did a presentation on the development of the Cantarell fontface and the tools he used at the  LGM 2010 conference.

Create a Lightbulb Icon that follows the tango! guidelines.

Note: I originally wrote this post for the inkcsape tutorials blog, but i liked this tutorial enough to do a shameless crosspost here on my personal blog.

Here is another great inkscape tutorial from vectortuts, demonstrating how to create a vector lightbulb icon within the tango! icon guidelines.

This tutorial is a great overview on using inkscape for drawing icons.  For an overview on managing your workflow in inkscape while designing icons, see the previously posted tutorial, “creating icons with inkscape – a basic workflow.”

Also, be sure to check out the vectortuts website. Even though there are only a handful of inkscape tutorials posted there, if you have intermediate to advanced inkscape skills, you may be able to apply some of the techniques from the other tutorials hosted there.

Note: This tutorial only demonstrates the process to create the light bulb icon above. The image below is a random subset of images that are in the tango! icon library. To get the tango! icons, including icons in the Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) format, visit the download page on the tango! website.

Issue 1 of ‘Code:Free’ – an Art Magazine for FOSS artists

chrisdesign has launched a new PDF magazine entitled ‘Code:Free’ and it is loaded to the brim with awesome examples of artwork created using Free Software. As can be expected, the majority of the art was created with Inkscape and the GIMP, but there are also some nice Open Clip Art remixes thrown in to mix it up a bit. Chrisdesign also writes some tutorials (some of which i have featured on the inkscape tutorials weblog) so be sure to browse his blog.

Be sure to check it out and support the growing number of artists using FOSS to create stunning works!

Inkscape 0.46 Fully released.

Even though the Linux versions of the newest version of Inkscape have been out for a few weeks now, the release of the OSX and Windows packages means that everyone can now enjoy the feature packed 0.46 version of Inkscape.

Make sure you digg the release of inkscape 0.46

Following is a blurb from the inkscape release announcement:

The Inkscape community today is announcing the release of the newest version of its open source vector graphics editor. Inkscape 0.46 is a major update that introduces native PDF support. The implementation of PDF support in Inkscape provides an easy, open source solution to editing PDF documents.

Tons of new features and performance improvements are included in this release. Dialogs now have the ability to be docked to the editing window. Gradients can be edited completely on-canvas. The new Paint Bucket Tool fills bounded areas with color. A new 3D Box tool helps create perspective-correct drawings. A new Tweak tool provides an intuitive method for editing paths and painting objects. The new Live Path Effects feature can create “brushes” and various organic effects on paths. Improvements to color management include support for color spaces other than sRGB. Most SVG filters are now implemented, and a new powerful UI is provided for editing filter stacks.

Inkscape can be downloaded for free from the inkscape website:
